WELCOME TO KAARMONA HOLSTEINS & JERSEYS
Our original properties of Beechwood & Kaarmona in the district of Kaarimba, northern Victoria, 35km north of Shepparton, were settled by our Great Grandfather, William Galt Jnr, in 1874. They were originally grazing properties with cereal cropping introduced. In the 1930’s irrigation came to the district, which then instigated dairying. In the early 1960’s our late father, John Sprunt, & our mother, Jennifer, established their very own Jersey stud, “Kaarmona”. The highlights of dad’s career would have been, besides his wife and six children, winning Champion Cow at the World Jersey Conference in 1976 with Ingalala Ensigns Arkona, VHC, and also winning Champion Jersey Cow at Melbourne Royal Show three consecutive years from 1979-81 with the same cow, Kaarmona Royal Handsome 2, VHC. That same cow also won 2 interbreed Championships within that same era. This family still exists in the herd today.
We were only in our teens when dad passed away in 1986, but Graeme continued to run the properties until 1990 when they were leased out. In 1994, we, brothers Graeme & Rohan, returned to the home farm as leasees under the partnership of GC & RG Sprunt. This all changed in 2000 when we purchased the 460ac property from remaining family members, to become the 4th generation to own the property.
We have always strived to be progressive farmers with Graeme concentrating on feed and pasture management to grow enough grass to feed the ever expanding herd, and Rohan focusing on genetics, marketing and financial management. We’ve come a long way since our first year of 1994 milking 140 cows. We are now milking some 260 cows & will continue to expand to have over 300 milking cows by the end of 2010, all from replacement heifers. A new 16 aside double up Rapid Exit herringbone dairy with individual feeding & automatic drafting was built in 2006 to accommodate our increased herd size. This investment has made a dramatic improvement to our production efficiency as well as cow efficiency. In our first full year of production, we gained an extra 15% production from the same amount of grain usage. Instead of the traditional blanket feeding, the grain was now individually fed on a production basis.
The drought, which began in 2002, has meant that we have had to be very proactive in system management. We are firm believers that our most margin is derived from grazing grass with approximately 2.0T grain supplement, but the continued dry has meant that we need to constantly monitor how best to feed the cows. A mixer wagon was purchased in 2008 due to limited water resources, but is generally only used for 1 Partial Mix Ration (PMR), consisting of ryegrass silage, cereal silage & either cereal or vetch hay, per day. We try to ensure that cows do what they do best & that is to graze grass to produce milk.
The highlights of our years to date as dairy farmers would have to include the following:
Winning 1st & 2nd , with ET full sisters from the Babe family, in the Snr 2yo in-milk at IDW 2001
Being awarded Honourable Mention Champion Jersey Cow IDW 2005, with Kaarmona Lester Babe 2 (ET), SUP93

But most importantly we continue to strive to:
Be respected by our peers, providing an enriched rural lifestyle for our families and remaining financial viable in this ever changing environment of dairy farming.
We hope you enjoy your tour through Kaarmona Holsteins & Jerseys.
